The Dog
Writers Association of America was appropriately born in a back room
at the Westminster Kennel Club dog show in 1935. It started with 30
editors and publishers. Today, members also include broadcasters and
online columnists, and total over 500 who make their living reporting
about 'man's best friend.' I always believed our awards are important, ever since I won my first for Best Book, back in 1973. Actually, I shared the award, but I couldn't have been happier for that 'atta boy.' It was better than getting a liver treat. What's surprising to some is how well done the work is. These magazine and newspapers stories, and books can be exceedingly very well written, sometimes there's great wisdom. I remember the one guy who wrote a book about a specific breed, and more than 20 years later I still recall the line, "In nature there are no punishments - only consequences." Now that is profound. We can all learn from it - not only as dog owners but as people. Here are this year's winners of the Dog Writer Association of America Awards, held on February 10, just before the start of Westminster. CATEGORY I: NEWSPAPERS A.
