MEDIA
ADVISORY ON HARTZ AND DURSBAN(R)
PRNEWSWIRE
-- JUNE 21 --On June 8, 2000, the US Environmental Protection Agency
(EPA) announced that by the end of the year the pesticide chlorpyrifos,
also known as Dursban(R), will no longer be manufactured for certain
household uses.
Some media have reported that Dursban(R) is used in the production of
pet flea collars. While some pet collars use this pesticide, The Hartz
Mountain Corporation does not use Dursban(R) in the production of any
of its dog or cat flea collars.
Moreover, all Hartz on-animal and in-animal products, including the
new over-the-counter line of Hartz(R) Advanced Care(TM) Brand Flea &
Tick Drops for cats and kittens and dogs and puppies and Hartz(R) Flea
Control Capsules(TM) for dogs and puppies utilize the most advanced
insect-killing and preventative technology to protect pets from fleas
and ticks. None of Hartz'(R) on-animal or in-animal products contain
Dursban(R).
Hartz(R) Control Pet Care System(R) Yard & Kennel Spray, the only
Hartz(R) EPA regulated product that contains Dursban(R), is being phased
out of the marketplace. This product will be replaced with a product
of comparable efficacy which does not contain Dursban(R).
The EPA advises consumers that short-term use, according to label instructions,
of products containing Dursban(R) does not pose an imminent risk and
existing products can be sold until the end of 2001.
The Hartz Mountain Corporation, headquartered in Secaucus, NJ, is committed
to sustaining and enhancing the quality of life for dogs, cats, birds,
fish and other small animals through exceptional pet care products,
breakthrough research and related philanthropic work. For more information,
