Home Care Tips for Recovery
Working with your veterinarian can help your cat recover from an illness. Provide a comfortable environment to reduce stress and always follow the home care instructions provided by your veterinarian.
- Make sure your cat has a warm, safe place to escape household noises.
- Block off isolated, hard-to-reach hiding places. You want to be able to help your cat if its condition worsens, and this will be difficult if you are unable to monitor your pet closely.
- Give your cat medication at regular intervals and follow your veterinarian’s recommendations. Ask a veterinary staff member to demonstrate how to give a proper dose to your cat. If you have any problems, call your veterinary hospital.
- Try not to disturb your cat when it is sleeping. A sick cat will need rest and can become unusually irritable if it does not feel well.
- Help your cat with grooming. A sick cat might not have enough energy to keep its coat clean and shiny. Use a soft bristle brush or grooming cloth and keep your sessions short.
- Feed your cat food recommended by your veterinarian. Some illnesses require special food to facilitate the recovery process. If you notice a change in eating habits, call your veterinarian.
- Keep water fresh and available in locations easily accessible to your sick cat. Keep track of any changes in its drinking behavior.
- Note anything unusual in your cat’s recovery and call your veterinarian’s office. Identifying complications early may mean fewer problems down the road.
- Always keep your follow-up appointments. They will help your veterinarian manage your cat’s recovery, as well as give you peace of mind.
