WELCOME FROM CWA PRESIDENT FRAN PENNOCK SHAW

Dear Media Colleagues:

As president of the international Cat Writers' Association Inc. (CWA), I want to thank you for your interest in our professional organization of published writers and artists who specialize in feline matters. From its beginnings in 1992, the CWA has grown to nearly 200 professionals from the United States, Canada, Australia, Germany, Israel, Great Britain and New Zealand. CWA members include writers and editors for cat-related and general-interest media, mystery and science fiction novelists, newspaper columnists, animal behaviorists, breeders, veterinarians, illustrators, photographers, public relations specialists, broadcasters and online professionals. Each member is dedicated to providing news, information and education on all aspects of cats, and to improving the quality of writing about cats and other companion animals.

We encourage professionalism among members, provide information on becoming published and help mentor new writers. We enable networking opportunities by offering contacts, informal discussions and our annual conference seminars which are open to writers, editors, agents and anyone serious about trying to get published. We are most proud of the networking opportunities we provide, in offering contacts, informal discussions and our annual conference seminars for writers, editors and publishers. The CWA's annual contest for published work, open to members and nonmembers alike, advances our goals by recognizing and rewarding outstanding communication about cats in nearly 40 categories, including magazine and newspaper articles and columns, fiction and nonfiction, online venues, photography, and poetry. Entrants compete for the CWA's Muse Medallion™ and for special, corporate-sponsored awards on such topics as nutrition, health and behavior.

Our media contact members are available to help you with any aspect of cat information. They are experienced sources on various feline subjects and many are knowledgeable writers about dogs as well. Please contact us by e-mail with any questions you have. We'll do our best to respond promptly or to refer you to someone in CWA who is a known expert about the topic you are questioning.

Please also think about joining CWA if you write about cats. We always welcome new members. For more information about membership requirements and about the CWA conference and contest, visit our web site, www.catwriters.org.

We look forward to talking to you.

Fran Pennock Shaw, CWA President
