A deadly cat virus, known as Feline Immunodeficiency Virus, or FIV, continues to spread through the cat population. FIV causes progressive immune disorders that eventually can lead to a disease with no known cure or treatment: Feline Acquired Immunodeficiency Syndrome – or feline AIDS*.

Fortunately for cat owners, a recent scientific breakthrough has brought about a preventative vaccine. Fort Dodge Animal Health, a division of Wyeth, recently announced the release of the first-ever FIV, or feline AIDS*, vaccine. Fel-O-Vax^® FIV is now available through licensed practicing veterinarians nationwide.

According to the American Association of Feline Practitioners (AAFP), up to one in 12 cats may test positive for FIV. However, in at-risk or sick cats the infection is spreading fast. FIV is transmitted from one cat to another primarily through saliva in bite wounds as a result of fighting. Any cat that has an opportunity to come in contact with outdoor or free-roaming cats has an increased likelihood of becoming infected with the virus.

Although initial symptoms of illness may take years to appear, FIV can cause serious problems for a cat that carries the virus. FIV weakens the animal’s immune system, so the cat is no longer able to fight off other, common infections.

Gini Wharton knows first hand the effects of FIV. She believes her cat Cyrano De Bergecat became infected with FIV from injuries he received in a cat fight. When Cyrano fell ill with FIV a few years later, no treatment could stop the progression of the disease.

The sad fact is many pet owners like Wharton may not be aware of the risks and signs of FIV in cats, or that there is now a vaccine to help prevent this heartbreaking disease.
